Scott Hopkins Trio
Noon – Thursday, March 6 – BTC Auditorium
The Scott Hopkins Trio features masterful musicians Scott Hopkins on acoustic and electric banjo, Lou Smaldone on upright bass and Brian Melick on drums. The group’s repertoire encompasses originals, jazz standards, roots music, Americana and contemporary tunes that are richly imbued with Hopkins’ strong bluegrass and folk influences. Melick supplies Latin grooves that combine with Smaldone’s rock-solid bass playing to create a distinctive ensemble sound. Guest saxophonist Kristina Johnson also will perform.

3/7, 1:30pm, Nusantara Arts Balinese Dance Workshop

3/7, 7pm, Nusantara Arts Balinese Gamelan Concert

3/12, 12pm, Atmospirit Duo

Atmos derives from the Greek ἀτμός (atmós) meaning “vapor,” and spirit comes from the Latin spiritus, meaning “breathing.” Flutist Melanie Chirignan and pianist Melanie Hardage have collaborated as an improvisational duo since 2023. They began by using classical works as a foundation for improvisation and soon discovered new possibilities for exploring musical ideas that move beyond the Western art music tradition.

The duo performs interactive programs throughout the Capital Region and in New York. Their music is defined by layered modal textures on the piano paired with floating, interwoven flute melodies.

4/10, 12pm, BTC Auditorium
Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Musicians of Ma’alwyck return to HVCC with a lively program of works for flute, guitar and violin by Beethoven, Ibert, Bartok and more. The musicians are Ann-Marie Barker Schwartz, founding director on violin; Norman Thibodeau on flute and Sten Isachsen on guitar. The group is the chamber ensemble in-residence at Schuyler Mansion, a NYS Historic Site in Albany, and SUNY Schenectady. It specializes in music performed in America during the 18th and 19th centuries, much of it sourced from the NYS Library’s Special Collections or by special commission

4/16, 12pm, Tangled Strings

Guitarist Django Klumpp and harpist Sunshine Quan have been weaving intricate musical textures since 2022, when they were both students at the Eastman School of Music. Together, they showcase lesser-known composers and works written for their unique duo.

Django Klumpp is a versatile musician who has captivated audiences across the United States and internationally. He is known for his “soulful and sensitive” playing, as well as his technical command, praised for “rapid fingers, extended technique and the ability to display several layers of sound at the same time” (Mansfield University’s The Flashlight).

Chinese Canadian harpist Sunshine Quan has performed with the Rochester Philharmonic, Binghamton Philharmonic, New York State Ballet and ensembles at Eastman, SUNY Fredonia, Nazareth College and Roberts Wesleyan College. She received a National Gold Medal from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Her musical journey has taken her across North America, China and Spain, where she toured with the Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra. Quan also plays the Chinese guzheng and is an active performer of traditional Chinese music.

4/22, HVCC's 2nd annual Guitar Festival
